Above is a flattened octahedron in which the edges of the eight faces are the 12 major personality disorders,
borderline to paranoid, antisocial to compulsive, schizoid to histrionic, avoidant to narcissistic, masochistic and
depressive to sadistic and negativistic, schizotypal to dependent.  At the six corners of this octahedron are places
where the personality disorders merge, at the flux face we find borderline, antisocial, avoidant, and schizotypal as
decompensated types.  At the fixed obsessive opposite is the compulsive, paranoid, dependent, and narcissistic,
this is the over-compensated pole.  These compensations can involve others, dependent, self, paranoid, the
external, narcissistic, the internal, compulsive.  Their decompensated opposites can involve others, borderline, self,
schizotypal, the external, antisocial, the internal, avoidant.  At the self corner we find isolation in schizoid, paranoid,
schizotypal, and negativistic and sadistic types.  The social corner brings together the histrionic, borderline,
dependent, masochistic and depressive opposites.  The extroverted particular corner unites the negativistic and
sadistic, the antisocial and narcissistic with the histrionic.  The introverted opposite brings together the avoidant,
schizoid, masochistic, depressive, and the obsessive compulsive.

The gods and goddesses come in pairs that shift through these distinctions.  Both Zeus (Jupiter) and Hera (Juno)
are elitists, but Hera (Juno) is more paranoid and Zeus (Jupiter) is more narcissistic.  Both Hermes (Mercury) and
Hestia (Vesta) deal with the public world, but Hermes (Mercury) is more histrionic and Hestia (Vesta) more compliant
and dependent.  Both Ares (Mars) and Aphrodite (Venus) can be impulsive, but Aphrodite (Venus) in a more
borderline way and Ares (Mars) in a more antisocial tone.  Both Artemis (Diana) and Apollo can be sadistic, but
Apollo cleaves more toward the narcissistic and Artemis (Diana) toward the schizotypal and paranoid, so the
polarity here could be narcissistic Apollo to paranoid Artemis (Diana), sadistic Apollo to schizotypal Artemis (Diana),
or narcissistic Apollo to negativistic Artemis (Diana).

Other patterns are masochistic and depressive Demeter (Ceres) to avoidant Poseidon (Neptune) (withdraws into
the deep sea).  Masochistic Semele to borderline Dionysus (Bacchus), is another pattern.  Hades (Pluto) can be
schizotypal, schizoid, avoidant to an avoidant, borderline Persephone.  Athena (Minerva) is either paranoid or
schizoid to an obsessive Hephaestus (Vulcan).  Schizoid Uranus has a avoidant wife (Gea) and Compulsive Iris can
be paired with dependent Ganymede.  Narcissistic Jason is involved with sadistic Medea and so forth.  Greek and
Roman mythology can be seen as a trip through axis II of the DSM IV that psychiatrists use for personality
disorders.

THE AXIS II DSM - IV ASSESSMENT OF THE GODS:

If you wander through the pages of Disorders of Personality, DSM -IV and Beyond, Theodore Millon, 1996, it is
easy to see Hermes-Mercury as an attention seeking "Theatrical Histrionic," or a "Vivacious Histrionic," or an
"Appeasing Histrionic," to the extent that Mercury is mercurial, he may be a "Tempestuous Histrionic" (See op. cit. p.
374), or even a "Disingenuous Histrionic."  In a similar fashion, Zeus-Jupiter can be an "Amorous Narcissist," or an
"Elitist Narcissist," or even an "Unprincipled Narcissist."  Mars-Ares can be a "Malevolent Antisocial," or a "Risk
Taking Antisocial," or a "Reputation Defending Antisocial."  Hestia shows the traits of an "Accommodating
Dependent," an "Immature Dependent," an "Ineffectual Dependent," or a "Selfless Dependent."  Poseidon-Neptune,
as a god that has retreated to the ocean can be a "Phobic Avoidant."  Ocean storms can reflect a "Hypersensitive
Avoidant," and a "Conflicted Avoidant," or even drawing into the inner self, the ocean deep, as a "Self Deserting
Avoidant."

Athena can show evidence of paranoid, schizoid, even obsessive compulsive behavior.  As goddess of wisdom,
Minerva, she can be the "Affectless Schizoid."  As a representative of principle, like her grandfather Uranus, she
can be a "Depersonalized Schizoid" (Uranus' wife Gea is the "Conflicted Avoidant" complement).  Athena can also
be an "Obdurate Paranoid" or a "Querulous Paranoid," or even a "Puritanical Compulsive."  In general, Hera-Juno
is the paradigmatic paranoid, a "Fanatic," a "Malignant" subtype.  It is Hephaestus-Vulcan that tends to be the
compulsive, "Bureaucratic," "Parsimonious," "Conscientious," even "Bedeviled Compulsive" (See op. cit., p. 523).

Aphrodite-Venus is the prototype for the Borderline, "Impulsive," "Self-Destructive," even "Petulant."  Hades-Pluto is
the prototype for the "Insipid Schizotype" who experiences life as "someone dead."  Artemis-Diana is the "Timorous
Schizotype" who hides the remote and split off wild.  Yet, when provoked, she can become paranoid, negativistic,
even an "Explosive Sadist" (or a "Spineless Sadist") when threatened with exposure. Her opposite, Apollo, can be
an "Elitist Narcissist," or a "Tyrannical Sadist,"  even an "Enforcing Sadist" as the occasion demands.  Demeter is
the protoype for the Depressive Masochist, in the "Self Undoing," "Possessive," "Oppressed," and "Virtuous" types.
Dionysus is the "Self-Destructive Borderline" and his mother, Semele is the Self-Undoing Masochist complement,
the true codependent.  To the extent that Hades is simply avoidant, like Poseidon-Neptune, his wife Persephone is
the borderline complement, to the extent that he withdraws to the schizoid and the schizotypal, she becomes the
"Conflicted Avoidant."  Iris appears to be a compulsive subtype (Bureaucratic Compulsive?) and Ganymede, some
sort of dependent personality.  Cronos-Saturn, like his son Zeus-Jupiter, was once a Narcissistic type, now locked
in Tartarus, in some sort of fanatic paranoid state?  His wife Rhea appears to be a Dependent type.

In the above Juno=Hera, Right Orbitofrontal, Minerva = Athena Right Frontal (knowledge that) and Vulcan = right
motor= Hephaestus (knowledge how, inclusive of connections to basal ganglia).  Cerces=Ceres=Demeter = right
parietal lobe (Here) and Neptune=Poseidon right temporal lobe (There, journey at sea), Diana = right occipital=
Artemis, Bacchus = Dionysus= connections to reward centers and limbic areas.  All right hemisphere of the
cerebrum.

Note narcissistic is an excess of proud and its opposite is avoidant, and excessively afraid and shy, proud is Zeus
and foreground, avoidant is Poseidon and retreat to the ocean depths.

Antisocial is angry and can do criminal acts.  He rarely feels guilt and his favorite god is Ares.  the opposite is
obsessive compulsive Hephaestus who is guilty because his work is not completed perfectly.

Paranoid is suspious, is like the goddess Hera, jealous.  Her opposite is the loving Borderline, but sexually loose,
Aphrodite

Apollo is excited and manic and mean and his opposite is masochist and sad and depressed Demeter.

Artemis is schizotypal, her ideas are wild and peculiar.  Her opposite is dependent Hestia, a conformist who does
what you want,

Athena is private and can be unfeeling, she is schizoid, but Hermes demonstrates lots of public feeling, though it is
usually a trick or a game.  He is Mercury, that is mercurial, quick to change his expression in order to please you.

Take the hexagram "Biting" (The Living I Ching, Deng Ming-Dao, p. 170), here we see Fire (Flame) above Thunder,
the boundary between Flame and Thunder, which belongs to Ares-Mars and the Antisocial personality disorder,
this hexagram is associated with criminal prosecution and imprisonment.

The "Poison" (Op. Cit. p. 158) hexagram joins Mountain to Wind and stands in  the realm of Hera and the Paranoid.
The hexagram connects honor and poison. Consider the poisonous mistrust of the Paranoid.

The "Marrying Sister" (Op. Cit. p. 302) hexagram joins Thunder to Lake and stands in the realm of Aphrodite and
the Borderline.  The lines of this hexagram connect marrying and being a second wife, the image mentions
"possible ruin," always present in the life of a Borderline.

The "Distress" (Op. Cit. p. 274) hexagram joins Lake to Water Pit and stands in the realm of Demeter and the
Masochistic and the Depressed.  It means to be hardpressed.  The lines speak of distress and misfortune as well
as sacrifices.

The "Delight" (Op. Cit. p. 150) hexagram joins Thunder to Earth and stands in the realm of Hermes and the
"Vivacious Histrionic."  The symbol for this hexagram means happy, delighted, travel, cheating, lies and thus fits the
union of the trickster Hermes and the Histrionic desire to make others happy.

The "Joining" (Op. Cit., p. 118) hexagram joins Water Pit to Earth and stands in the realm of Hestia and the
Dependent personality.  The symbol for this hexagram means to follow and it fits the dependent nature of this
boundary.

The "Well" (Op. Cit., p. 278) hexagram joins Water Pit to Wind and stands in the realm of Hephaestus and the
Obsessive Compulsive personality.  The symbol for this hexagram is a well. The compulsive provides service and
nourishment to others with obsessive conscientiousness and persistence just as an old well continues to provide
water from its depths.

The "Smallness Tames" (Op. Cit. p. 122) hexagram joins Wind to Heaven and stands in the realm of Athena and
the Schizoid personality.  The symbol for this hexagram is little and domestication.  We think here of how the
schizoid becomes socially small and remote and domesticates her animal passions to the point they cannot be
found.

The "Adornment" (Op. Cit, p.174) hexagram joins Mountain to Fire and stands in the realm of Apollo and the Manic,
Negativisitic, and Sadistic personalities.  The symbol for this hexagram means adorn, ornamental, light, and
luminous.  So also Apollo is the god of the luminous and the manic, but that same divine light can burn the mortal,
can become the "explosive sadist."

The "Splitting" (Op. Cit., p. 178) hexagram joins Mountain to Earth and stands in the realm of Zeus and the
Narcissistic.  The symbol of this hexagram stands for strip, skin, peel, shell.  The Narcissistic type splits off a false
skin, a shell, he is like Zeus, a skin changer who takes the form of a swan (or of a ruling god) to obtain his
"Amorous Narcissist," or "Elitist Narcissist," rewards.  P. 278 of Deng Ming-Dao's "The Living I Ching" has this
statement "When Adornment becomes excessive, it leads to disintegration."  This captures essence of the problem
of narcissism.

The "Walking" (Op. Cit., p. 126) hexagram joins Heaven to Lake and stands in the realm of Poseidon (the powerful
god who hides in the ocean deep) and the Avoidant.  Here the lines capture the essence (see p. 127), "The recluse
is pure."  "But they walk on the tiger's tail and are bitten."  The Avoidant person becomes a recluse to avoid the bite.

The "Great Holdings" (Op. Cit., p. 142) hexagram joins Fire to Heaven and stands in the realm of Artemis and the
Schizotypal.  P. 143 of the above, 1st line captures the Schizotypal and Artemis mind set "Do not mix with the
harmful and there will be no disaster."  Also the second line "A big wagon, loaded, with a place to go."  This, is the
mind of the schizotypal.  But, the problem is that the wagon and the load are empty of reason and reality.  As the
commentary described in the I Ching of Wilhelm/Baynes (Bollingen Series, Princeton) shows, the wagon and its
load must be delivered over to public reality.  It is the isolation of the Schizotypal that destroys her.  So Artemis
must fade and die to be replace by Isis and the Virgin Mary.
