Ecoholics Annonymous:A 12 Step Program for
Dependence and Codependence on Ecological
Waste and Plunder (Ecohol) (inspired by "On
Steps to An Ecology of Mind" by Gregory
Bateson)(and by Systems Theory) using the
recovery principle of AA, NA, Alanon, CODA,
SLAA, ACOA, etc., the AA BIG BOOK, etc.

Some of us believe that
some things are infinitely
precious, species,
environmental resources,
human life, human time,
human creativity, human
labor.  To sell something
infinitely precious for a
finite price is to create an
infinite loss, hence
PRODUCT based on
finite wages for infinitely
precious human time and
environmental resources
would be a gross infinite

To believe this, feel this,
and yet get caught up in
the systems that generate
this loss makes one an
adult child of ecoholism
and a codependent on
environmental and human
Ecoholics Annonymous follows the 12 step
program used by groups like AA, Alanon, NA,
CODA, etc.  Its focus is on our addiction to
waste, speed, plunder, environmental
destruction, and environmentally destructive
living, the culture of consumerism and more,
more, more.  This culture generates a
dependence and codependence on
overstimulation.  This is the phenomenon of
"craving" discussed by the "Big Book" of AA,
but amplified by a marketing culture and a
marketing economy gone wild.  We are all
Adult Children of this crazy culture, hence we
are all ecologically nuts, crazy, insane.

The first step is to come to admit our
powerless over this ecohol, this wasteful
oversimulated system.  The second step is to
come to believe that our real maker,
providence, the god -good orderly
development, of our understanding, the
ecology of mind of our understanding, the
cosmic, natural system of our understanding,
whatever it is for us that is more than the
narrow little system we are in, that this higher
and better order can restore us to sanity,
bring us out of this crazy way of living.

The third step is to make a commitment, a
surrender, to turn our will and our life over to
this better, less addictive, less narrow and
crazy system, to turn our will over to
something higher and better than the
addictive cycles of our current and limited
material understanding.

In Ecoholics A., we are open to all, Christian
and Non-Christian,  to both traditional and
non-traditional, skeptical and credulous,
conservative and liberal, fundamentalist and
anti-fundamentalist, orthodox and
non-orthodox, born again and skeptical,
agnostic and atheistic, rational and irrational,
romantic and realistic, idealistic and
pragmatic interpretations of "Higher Power."
Higher power can be "buddhamind," "ecology
of mind," the "Dao," "Jesus," "Buddha" etc.,
etc.  We do not put down the use of the group
or the use of a door knob as "God," or "Higher

We do try to discourage you from preaching to
your Higher Power or to other members of
Ecoholics A.  We try to discourage you from
inflicting your mother's Higher Power on other
members of the group.  The major point is that
we no longer have to be a Higher Power in
our own lives and the lives of other living
things.  We no longer need to make ecological
waste our higher power, or drugs, or alcohol,
or other addicts or alcoholics.

The four step is to take inventory of our
feelings and needs, our behavior, our
character, our dispositions and plans in
respect to what we do and how we feel.  Who
are we?  What is really driving us?  What are
we really doing with our lives?  What is its real
affect on us, others, our environment, our
society, the planet as a whole?

From here we work step by step through the
other eight steps of the 12 step program,
using a sponsor, 12 step meetings, 12 step
literature as our guide.
Ecoholics A. supports the recognition of our powerlessness over the consumption
and use of ecological waste and the plunder, and use of plunder of natural
resources and natural ecosystems, our powerlessness over our codependence, our
enabling of this plunder, the consumption of this plunder, this plunder mentality on
the part of others and our society.  In Ecoholics A., we begin with honesty, with
facing reality about our thoughts, feelings, and actions, and the effects and
implications of these thoughts, feelings, and actions in a world that has gone insane
with plunder and devastation of the environment, with the consumption and sale and
purchase of the products of this plunder.  In Echolics A., we try to penetrate the fog
of denial and escape that encase our lives and deaden our experience of life and
alienate us from nature and the planet and our environment and our future, our
history, from our full experience of the present moment as the gift of nature and the
natural ecosystems of the planet.

Because of the global thrust of ecohol, environmental plunder, fossil fuel rooted
environmental stimuli overloading the external environment with change and energy
and polluted resources, the social and behavior pot is continually stirred up.  We
become addicted to trauma and drama, we become enablers and grow gradually
spiritually dead.  Ecoholics A. is a program of spiritual regeneration independent of
any theology or religion or ideology.  Its goal is total ecological concord in heart,
mind and body, an ecology of mind and spirit that helps us work toward health in
body and environment without involvement in the trauma and drama normally
associated with the generation of ecological waste and all its associated social

Unlike other recovery movements that focus on one fellowship and one approach,
Ecoholics A. supports all 12 step movements, therapy, spiritual journey, meditation,
recovery, psychotherapy that is win-win, that is in harmony with a harmonious
ecology of mind and body.  Our basic approach is "one day at a time," "easy does
it," "its about wanting what you have not having what you want," "first things first,"
"keep it simple," "let go and let ----," "There is a ---- and I am not him, her,it," (fill in
--- with God or Good Orderly Development, Allah, Buddhamind, Ecology of Mind,
etc), "surrender," "acceptance," "detachment," "service," "an attitude of gratitude,"
"it is an inside job," "attitude ajustment," "accentuate the positive, eliminate the
negative, and do not mess with Mr. in-between."  It does not matter what you
surrender to, are grateful to, as long as it is not you and is win-win for the ecological
well being of all things.

The virtue of this approach is that it prevents the compulsive running our minds and
bodies in a fruitless attempt to stop the tidal wave of destruction that is the result of
our codependence on ecological disaster and the associated trauma and drama.
Ecological change must begin within in gratitude and the desire to want what we
have rather than have what we want.  Nothing else will stop the fruitless craving that
drives the greed and lust, envy and pride that lie beneath the consumer culture, the
uncontrolled marketing orientation that is plundering the ecology of the planet.

The real source of the ecohol is a use of environmental plunder as a means of
escaping self hate.  Our god like destruction of the environment has caused us to try
to be gods and to punish ourselves for our failure to achieve god like status.  The
more we punish ourselves, the more we attempt to escape through further use of
plunder and market behavior, the more we feel god like as a result of our plunder
and consumption highs and the more we punish ourselves as we come down from
these highs.  It is an addictive cycle of self punishment and self destruction that we
must stop and stopping is an inside job.  Hatred does not cease through hatred,
hatred ceases through love, according to Buddhist scripture.

Win-Win success and harmony for all things in their proper place is the only good
path.  Humans must not try to become gods or they destroy themselves and their
environment. Once we use spiritual recovery to control our phenomena of craving,
our wants, our desire, our greed, our lust, our envy, we cease supporting those
aspects of the consumer and marketing culture that are destroying the planet
because we cease consuming as much because our external needs are less
because our inner strength and satisfaction, our attitude of gratitude, is greater.
