ASTROLOGY
Astrology is not a subject that a scientist, should be writing about because of the
prejudice against it.  Think about it.  Mothers would eat different kinds of food in
the winter than in the summer and spring?  Could that fail to influence the
developing child? How then can you claim there can be no differences in children
related to the month of their birth.  Who is the person that is prejudiced?  The
person willing to consider that birth month might have an influence and the
dogmatist that rules it out because of authoritarian ridicule generated by the
scientific priesthood
Consider the following Word Document Dec. 2011

This is not to say that astrology is, or can be, a science.  It is a form of myth,
metaphysics, and magic.  It is an attempt to generate stories that relate everything
together in a world in which facts can only be examined by analysis and
differentiation.  Astrology does not deal with facts.  Yet, there is a level of
existence that can only be known by myth.  Astrology is an animal of that type.  It
belongs to the romantic temper, not to the realistic, the subjective and the fanciful,
not the objective, measurable, and verifiable.

Astrology is about right hemisphere connections and myths, not about left
hemisphere facts and measurable particulars.  Astrology does not deal with the
exact and knowable, but with the diffuse and unknowable.  It is away of taking the
indefinite and intangible and giving it a tangible symbol, a definite interpretation.  It
is a magical art, not a technical science.

This does not mean that astrology never comes up with accurate interpretations
and predictions.  It just means that these interpretations and predictions cannot be
pinned down, quantified, explained in objective terms.  It can never be proven that
the definitive result is not just an accident, and artifact of circumstances. Astrology
belongs to that level of interpretation and relies on myth as much as fact, authority
as much as proof, fantasy as much as measurement.

The purpose of astrology is to satisfy the romantic temper, not the scientific,
realistic temper.  It proves nothing and suggests everything.  It generates
speculation but never really demonstrates what that speculation means.  Even so,
it has its uses, more as a way of suggesting than as a way of proving.  It is a
useful artistic device for suggesting possibilities, but a very poor substitute for
demonstrated fact.  I use it to suggest areas I might explore.  Never as a way of
knowing specific results, for the later I need observation, measurement, not symbol
and suggestion, the realm of the astrological myths.

One possibility that would support the astrological hypothesis is the notion that
existence is eternal, timeless, a set of improbabilities emerging out of infinite flux.
There is no limit to the improbable in such a flux. Basal existence can be infinitely
more complex than a coral reef.  In such a situation all kinds of
protoconsciousness, protoemotion, protomind, prototime, protosubjectivity are
possible.  Thus, you can examine the orbit of a planet and determine its inner
emotional, protoemotional state.  Passion becomes the inside of emotion.  The
passion of the Sun would be more simple, less organized, less informed, but far
more intense than the passion of a brain or an animal.

Planets with regular orbits, untilted orbits, would demonstrate more upright, more
harmonious, more beautiful emotions, thus Venus planet of love.  While irregular
orbits further from the Sun would be more irregular, darker, more angry, thus,
Mars. Perfect, but tilted orbits, like those of Neptune, far out in space, would be
deceptive, out of this world, but spiritual in a dreamy, fanciful, way.  Something
totally on its side would be eccentric, independent, thus Uranus.  The Sun, full of
light and the center of things would be the conscious ego, and the darker Moon,
the subconscious, hidden emotions, and Pluto, lord of the underworld, the deep
unconscious.

Such things are very possible if the world has the hidden multidimension complex
aspect that string theory and complexity theory and quantum mechanics seem to
indicate, read the work of Alfred North Whitehead and process theory.  Read the
Universe is a Green Dragon, by Brian Swimme.

The properties that the planets seem to have are those they would have if they
were giant minds of a primitive type giving off some strange influence over events
at a deep level and their influence displayed by the character and placement of
their orbits.  For example, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune form a series of
gas giants.  Of these, Jupiter, closest to the Sun, is the sunniest and most open
and Neptune, furthest away is the most dark and deceptive and "far out."

Jupiter, the largest, is the most expansive.  Uranus, flipped on its side, is the
strangest, the most peculiar.  Jupiter is closer to the Sun than Saturn, its orbit is
more regular and less tilted, it is slightly larger.  In comparison, Jupiter stands for
things upright and light and larger and more expansive and more regular and bright
and Saturn for the more tilted and darker and more contracted and less regular
and bright.

Neptune has the most regular orbit of the group, but is the darkest and most tilted.
Neptune has come to stand for harmonious and beautiful things that are hidden and
dark and dreamy and deceptive and tilted and devious, thus, drugs, spiritual
notions with little contact with reality, etc.

Between the Earth and the Sun lie Venus and Mercury.  Mercury is closest to the
Sun and has come to stand for the communication of the Sun to other planets,
thus, messages and relations in general.  Venus has the most perfect orbit of any
of the planets and is least tilted, hence, it has come to stand for love and lovely
things, things beautiful and ideal.  It contrast, Mars on the darker side of Earth,
with a tilt to its axis and a much more irregular orbit, Mars has come to stand for
the irregular and dark aspect of all that Venus is, hence strife rather than harmony,
war rather than love, struggle rather than resolution.

Between Mars and Jupiter lies the asteroid belt, thousands of small fragments, tiny
bits of planet.  Jupiter would absorb these bits and pieces as moons and integrate
them into its system.  Mars pulls them away from Jupiter and keeps them in
chaotic orbits that bring them in contention with each other.  Thus, Mars brings
chaos and war and Jupiter brings peace and leadership.

The Sun is the center, the ego consciousness of the system.  The Moon is its
opposite, dependent on the Earth, giving off reflected light, influencing the tides of
the Earth.  The Moon is the subjective and emotional complement to the ration and
conscious aspect symbolized by the Sun.  The Sun is the frontal lobe of the brain
controlling the speech of Broca's area (Mercury) and the actions of the motor
areas (Mars).  Earth is the central sulcus of the brain with the sense of touch and
the somatosensory strip on one side with sensations coming in from all parts of the
body on one side (Venus) and actions and motor responses on the other side
(Mars) as well as speech (Mercury).  In between is the insula with its control over
the tidal influences of emotions and moods (Moon).  The Sun is also the thalamus
and reticulate system of the brain stem that controls attention and focus on visual
impulse in the occipital lobes of the cerebrum.  The later is the Sun rising over the
horizon, also known, as the ascendant.  As these ascending attentions of the brain
associate together they rise to midheaven, in association with temporal lobe and
parietal lobe sensations (Mercury and Venus).  All this combines to form Gea, to
form Earth (the association areas of the cerebral cortex).

Jupiter expands these influences, it is the planning aspect of the frontal cortex, the
motor facilitating aspect.  Saturn is frontal areas coordinating morality, memory,
the censorship of frontal cortex plans, the inhibition, it is also connections with the
memory system and the basal ganglia, the hippocampus, and striated bodies.  At
some point all of this begins to yield to the cingulate (Uranus), limbic lobe,
rhinencephalon, temporal lobes (Neptune) and amygdala (Pluto), the darker and
deeper parts of the brain, less conscious, less factual, more primitive.

This is the language used by Astrology. Perhaps there is no factual basis to it at all
but it provides a series of wonderful metaphors for the polar operations of the
brain and of human consciousness.  Mars is obviously a symbol for the
sympathetic aspect of the autonomic nervous system, the fight or flight response
controlled by the amygdala.  Venus is a symbol for the parasympathetic opposite,
the resting, digesting aspect controlled by the hypothalamus and the medulla.

The Moon stands for the autonomic nervous system and the Sun for the central
nervous system opposite.  The Moon is the old invertebrate tunicate brain that
would have the embryo become a sack of digestive organs.  The Sun is the
vertebrate, the fish brain alternative that wants to swim into the light and explore
the world.  If the Moon is an invertebrate and the Sun is a vertebrate, Mercury is
the development of the vertebrate nervous system, the fish that is aware of its
environment and able to swim with other fish, to school.

If Mercury is a fish, Venus is an amphibian, resting in the mud, eating a lot.  Mars
is a reptile, a dinosaur, specializing in the amygdala, the fight and flight response.
Jupiter is a bird, a dinosaur that takes to the air and expands its world.  Saturn is a
primitive mammal that hides in its borrow and survives by contracting into a ball, by
storing up for the winter. Saturn is a porcupine type creature, or a hibernating bear.

The radiating evolution of the mammals explores the world of Uranus, the sky
father.  The first human to make a tool, to light a fire.  These primitive men
explored the realm of Uranus, the expanding cerebrum of the human brain and its
ability to explore the world. Civilized man/woman belongs at once to Mercury and
Neptune  Master of language and communication and business skills, he/she is
strong in the Mercury element, but she has also sailed the seas of the
hydrosphere, the atmosphere, and now of space.  She lies at the frontier of the
realm of Pluto, lord of the underworld of outer space and she finds him very tiny in
comparison with the endless realm of the ancient stars.

As we go up the levels of organization, we progressively merge the technical and
the magical, we progressively use the tiny and the minute to serve the boundless.
Eventually we reach the level of the integration of the infinite and the infinitesimal.
At this point we leave the measurable world and enter into the realm of the gods
and the soul.  What we term magic, supernatural, astrological, may simply be the
natural extended down to the ultimate minute infinitesimal being from within inner
root and outer extension into the boundless.  At some point these two opposites
may come together in a magical circle that extends the visible into the invisible and
integrates the body with the inner soul.  This magical realm, be it only right
hemisphere fantasy, or deeper hidden meaning, is the realm of the astrological arts.
The Zodiac traces a magic circle around the cerebral cortex.  It moves from the
right parietal lobe and occipital association areas (Cancer and Moon) through the
right and left occipital lobes (Leo and Sun) and passes to the left temporal area
(Virgo and Mercury), to the left parietal and somatosensory areas (Libra and
Venus) and then forward into the motor areas of the left frontal lobes and
associated basal ganglia, cingulate and connections to the amygdala (Scorpio and
Mars and Pluto) and moves forward to Broca's Area and the planning and motor
facilitation areas of the left frontal lobe (Sagittarius and Jupiter).  Now the circle
moves forward into the decision areas of the forward part of the frontal lobes
(Capricorn and Saturn).  From here it moves into the non-verbal right hemisphere
frontal lobe and down into the cingulate area and basal ganglia (Aquarius and
Uranus) and then further down into the rhinencephalon and hippocampus and
associated temporal lobe structures (Pisces and Neptune).  From here it passes to
the deeper structures underneath the motor cortex and associated basal ganglia
and connections to the right cingulate and corpus callosum white matter connecting
both right and left motor areas (Aries and Mars and Pluto) and similar connecting
structures supporting parietal association areas (Taurus and Venus) and the
temporal lobes and Broca's area as well (Gemini and Mercury).  Now the circle
has gone all around the cerebrum and is entering in the connection between the
right parietal lobe and the right and left occipital lobes (Cancer and Leo) where it
began.

Thus, our mythology, our astrology can trace a path through brain and brain
evolution, as well as through the heavens.  This is right hemisphere stuff and does
not belong to the finite game.  It is about the brain as a garden rather than as a
machine.  Here we need to pick up James P. Carse and "Finite and Infinite
Games," page 9, "the rules of an infinite game must change in the course of
play...are changed to prevent anyone from winning the game and to bring as many
persons as possible into the play."  The kind of astrology we are doing here is not
a finite science but a poetic piece of the endless game.  There are no winners and
there is no right answer or final meaning.

But furthermore, there is a sense in which each culture is blind to any truth beyond
its own narrow focus.  The temperate regions of Europe developed a culture of
emphasis on simple scientific reality that blinded them to the deeper spiritual truths.
In contrast, focus on these spiritual truths in South Asia has blinded that culture to
simple physical facts, until the study of European science was introduced to South
Asia by the British.  Even in South Asia, the Jains seem to be able to focus on the
soul, the Buddhists on the infinite flux that generates all things, and the Hindus on
the unity of all things in Brahman, and with Vishnu as the symbol of the many
avatars of the truth of the Vedanta.  Yet, none of these adequately understands
the deeper oneness of all paths.

So also a development of an understand of Astrological relationships in the Middle
East has caused Eurasian cultures to focus too much on fate, but for the skeptical
cultures of Western Europe and North America to ignore these relationships, to put
too much home in existential freedom, in the freedom and liberty of the choosing
person. Everywhere the larger framework is lost.  Thus, of the eight trigrams,
Heaven seems most clear to South Asia, and Wind to Tibet, Mountain to Western
Europe and North America and Waterpit to Middle Eurasia.  Earth appears to
belong to the Far North of Europe and North America and Thunder to the seaboard
areas of China, and the North Atlantic and Pacific. Flame appears to belong to the
waves, to English speaking areas and French speaking areas of the Atlantic and
Pacific.  Lake appears to belong to Southeast Asia, Africa, and South America, the
last bits and pieces that remain of what was once European empire.

Thus, the South Asia ability to visualize billions of souls existing endlessly even in
stones and trees, is set against the Northern European ability to test even atomic
fact, the Middle Eastern ability to visualize existence ordered by a cosmic
astrology set against the British and American power to believe in individual rights
and the French ability to visualize some kind of existential inner self generation. The
idealistic metaphysics of Tibet, is set against the pragmatic market oriented
behavior of New York. The skepticism of Oxford is set against the credulous
animism of the Amazon and the Congo. Out of these polarities, there emerges a
metaphysical game that matches the boundless game of the infinite flux that makes
all improbable(s) probable, particularly for the higher levels of self consciousness
that rise to improbability in the very generation of their complex awareness.
