THE CUBE AND OCTAHEDRON OF ALL SYSTEMS
An octahedron has been flattened.  It has six
corners (vertex) Education-Group,
Phenomenology-Self form the first polarity,
Religion-Whole and Technology-Part are the
second and Opera-flux to Scholarship-fixed are the
third polarity.  Phenomenology-Self is the top yang
of the Mountain trigram and Education-Group is the
top yin line of the Lake trigram.  Religion-Whole is
the middle long yang line of the Water Pit trigram
and Technology-Part is the short yin lines of the
middle line of Earth, Thunder, Flame and Mountain.
The Opera-flux pole is the long bottom line of the Heaven, Flame, Thunder, and Lake
trigrams of the Chinese I Ching (Yi Jing, Book of Changes).  The Scholarship-fixed pole
is the broken bottom line that is found in the last line of the Earth, Lake, Water-Pit and
Thunder trigrams.  Flame is the Design face of the octahedron, Thunder is Business,
Mountain is Mathematics, Wind is Metaphysics, Government is Waterpit, Magic is
Heaven, Lake is Literature.  Ideology is the edge between the government face and the
literature face of the flattened octahedron.  Criticism is the edge on the opposite side that
divides design from mathematics.  In a similar fashion theology is the edge opposite
economics, art opposite history, philosophy opposite journalism, craft opposite ethics,
psychology is opposite mythology.

The Earth generates a long impressionistic top yang line that causes it to rise up as a
Mountain trigram into the air, into the Wind.  Here it takes on a middle long yang line that
cools and congeals it to generate snow and rain.  It runs down that long yang line as the
rivers of Water-Pit that channel the water to the receptive Earth.

Mountain functions here as the input data and analysis that stops action and blocks
interference and allows genetic information to isolate and generate separate species.
These species may rise up on genetic peaks, adaptive peaks, where they created set
points, genes that radiate orderly impulses, seeds blown in the wind, that will congeal
systems that take corrective feedback to earth, create adaptive phenotypes in the
measurable world.

They wash into Lake, into gene pools where they combine and recombine and emerge
as various expressions, as Thunder in the visible world.  The Flame of competition, of
struggle and death, burns off the unfit.  But the energy of Heaven endlessly stimulates
mutations and environmental changes that increase the diversity that rains down and
combines in gene pools, in Lake, which joyously collects, reproduces, combines male
and female to display the random fruits of this evolutionary exuberance. (References
here to the Early Heaven sequence of the trigrams of the I Ching, Yi Jing, Chinese Book
of Changes, and even more primitive, more ancient conceptions that may have
proceeded the Early Heaven sequence).
_______________________________________________________________________
Confucius is the greatest of all the Chinese sages (Master Kung, born 551 BCE in
China).  He founded the "Ju" school (Confucianism).  This school is associated with six
books (Classics): I or Yi, the Book of Changes, Shih, the Book of Songs, Shu, the Book
of History, Li, the Book of Ritual, and Yueh, the Book of Music, and a book of local
history called the "Spring and Autumn Annals." (See A Short History of Chinese
Philosophy, Fung Yu-Lan, edited Derk Bodde, Free Press, 1948, p. 38 -39).

"Yang" may have originally meant sunshine and "Yin" meant lack of sunshine.  Later
"yang" came to mean the male, the active, the hot, the bright, and "yin" its passive and
female and cold and dark opposite. (See, op. cit., p. 138)  In the Book of Changes,
"Yang" is symbolized by and unbroken line and "Yin" by a broken line.  Groups of three
divided, or undivided, broken or unbroken, lines generate eight "trigrams," which are
combined to form 64 "hexagrams." (op. cit., p. 139), bundles of six lines.

The Heaven, Flame, Mountain, and Wind trigrams are all similar in the way that their top
line is a long yang line.  The Earth, Water-Pit, Lake, and Thunder trigrams all have a
broken top line.  Heaven, Flame, Mountain, and Wind all go their own way, rise up, tend
to lead, to be superior to others.  Thunder, Lake, Water-Pit, and Earth all tend to fall
down, to bring things down low where all things merge together.

The Lake, Wind, Heaven, Water-Pit trigrams are all similar in the way that their middle
line is a long yang line.  The Lake, Wind, Heaven, and Water-Pit trigrams are wet and
rain making, rich with generative rainfall.  They connect all things together in the greater
water cycle of the seasons.  The Flame, Mountain, Earth, and Thunder trigrams have a
broken middle line.  Here is where the Earth becomes dry and broken and fragments as
a result of fire, earthquake, geological thrusting, etc.

The Mountain, Wind, Water-Pit, and Earth trigrams all have a broken bottom line.  In the
Lake and Heaven and Thunder and Flame trigrams, this bottom line is long and yang.
Lake and Heaven and Thunder and Flame are supplied with bottom line yang energy
that bursts out as fire and vibration, as storms in Heaven and waves on Lake.  Earth
absorbs this energy and Water-Pit encloses it, Mountain blocks it and Wind disperses it
into corners and crevices, breaks it up into puffs and breezes till it becomes gentle and
harmless.  Thus, the long bottom yang line represents flux and energy and its yin
opposite represents the fixed, the regulative, the blocking and regulation of energy flow.

Below is a flattened octahedron that symbolizes these relationships.  At the top is the
integration oriented right hemisphere of the cerebrum and at the bottom is the fact
oriented left hemisphere.  On the left is the executive function oriented frontal lobes of
the anterior portion of the cerebrum.   To the right is the associative posterior cerebrum.
t

The edges of the above flattened octahedron represent the emotional lower brain
centered on the amygdala, hypothalamus, and limbic lobe.  The center of the flattened
octahedron represents information processing areas in the basal ganglia and
hippocampus and connections to the cerebral cortex.  On the left are the choice making
cingulate and frontal lobe functions and on the right are the association areas connecting
temporal, parietal, and temporal lobes.  The right hemisphere parietal lobe functions as
the trigram Lake, integrating various sensory impressions to generate as sense of space
and place.  The left hemisphere temporal lobe functions as the trigram Thunder, bringing
together sound and speech and integrating and understanding of human expression.
The left hemisphere frontal lobes function as the trigram Flame, bringing together various
impulses to respond, plans that burst into flame as focal points of consciousness and
motor response.  The right hemisphere frontal area functions as the trigram Heaven as it
brings together various themes that are the source of plans and further action.

The association areas of the left parietal and temporal lobes function as the trigram
Earth. Here particular facts are recognized and measurements understood.  The areas of
the frontal left frontal lobe that monitor these facts serve as the trigram Mountain.  Here
cautions and concerns are assembled that might cause the frontal lobe planning areas
and executive functions to block planned actions.  Associated with Mountain are
complementary areas in the right frontal lobe that look at the global paradigms, the seeds
blown in the wind, clouds blown in the wind that bring rain and snow.  This area functions
as the Wind trigram.  Here the executive areas of the frontal lobe develop global ethical
paradigms, this is the center of the Superego, the internal Parent.  Areas of the right
motor cortex and parietal and temporal lobes that are responsible for carrying out
habitual stimulus and response sequences, and the associated structures of the basal
ganglia that respond to discipline and training, these areas function as the Water Pit
trigram that channels the rain into rivers, channels, low places, dangerous rapids in the
eroded Earth trigram that is the association areas of the parietal, occipital, and temporal
lobes.

Here we integrate a number of systems in a single set of symbols, genetic systems,
neurological systems, historical systems, metaphysical systems, mathematical systems,
psychological systems, etc.  All laid out in our two dimensional flattened octahedron.

This octahedron converts into the four sided tetrahedron of the four elements, fire, earth,
air, and water by using the following conversions: fire=Flame Trigram, water=Lake
Trigram, earth=Earth Trigram, air=Wind Trigram.  Vertex opposite fire = Water Pit
(pottery, or water holding metal, forged in fire) Trigram, vertex opposite water = Mountain
Trigram (Salt), vertex opposite air = Thunder Trigram (Dust), vertex opposite earth =
Heaven Trigram.  For conversions into the Chinese system of the five elements see
notes elsewhere on this site.  Earth is fact oriented left hemisphere association areas of
parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes and Fire is action oriented left hemisphere motor
and executive function of the frontal lobes.  Air is complementary right hemisphere
executive functions controlling motor action and Water is right hemisphere association
areas and connections to thalamus, hippocampus, amygdala, cingulate cortex, limbic
lobes, hypothalamus and midbrain and centers controlling emotions, sleep, and
dreaming.

Earth is the Child, the emerging libido up from the Id.  Fire (Flame Trigram) is the Adult,
the developing Ego. Air (Wind Trigram, the subtle message that penetrates everywhere,
the voice that echoes in all places, whispers over all things) is the Parent, the Superego.
Water (Lake Trigram) is the Egg, the deep order of the unconscious, basal ganglia, the
sleeping and dreaming right parietal, occipital, and temporal association areas and
connections to lower neural pathways and timing areas in the mid brain that control the
associations that emerge in dreams.  This is realm of the Id and the Anima-Animus of
Jung and Freud.  Our Parent preaches to us and our Child listens.  The Adult carries on
normal talking and listening conversation.  The Egg is only reached through hypnosis.
